“I love you.”
When was the last time this sentiment graced the lips of the one you love, glided into your awaiting ears, and gleaned rest within your delicate heart?
How did you feel?
Did you think, “Finally, someone loves me for who I am”?
- Are you thinking of the first time your spouse or significant other said, “I love you”?
- Or, when your children learned to say “I love you” in their proper context?
- Or, are you thinking of a friend who said “I love you” to express how much he or she valued your friendship?
- As time passed, did the people you’re thinking about continue to express their love through their actions?
- Or, were there times when they made you feel angry, sad, lonely, or afraid?
- Furthermore, have they ever distanced themselves from you, even if only temporarily, because you did not meet their expectations?
Don’t fret if you answered “yes” to the last few questions.
Although love between people can be beautiful and special, the truth is, it can also be conditional and fickle. These changing feelings can force you out of your fantasy of what true love should be, and into a blatant reality:
Love between people will always be imperfect.
These experiences may catapult you into searching desperately for true love, which, honestly, you will never find in another person.
But, if you choose to seek God, you will find that God loves you so much. His divine essence is love and He is the sole source of true love.
Embracing the Love of God
The apostle John confirms this in 1 John 4:15-16: “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” (KJV)
What message is the apostle John conveying to His audience that we can receive today?
The apostle John states that “God is love”. When we confess Jesus Christ is God’s Son, John says God dwells in us and we dwell in God. Furthermore, because God is love, we are indeed dwelling in love. So, we are able to love Him because of His love for us. This is confirmed in 1 John 4:19 (KJV) which states, “We love him, because he first loved us.”
God expresses His love for us through His actions. For example, John 3:16 (KJV) reads, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
God sacrificed His only Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. Jesus is God in human form (see John 1:1-14; John 10:30). So, technically, God sacrificed Himself. His ultimate sacrifice expresses God’s love for you. I pray you are beginning to understand that God loves you so much.
Questions to Consider
- Have you confessed that Jesus is God’s Son?
- Have you accepted God’s love by accepting His Son, Jesus Christ, as your personal Savior?
- Do you embrace the unconditional love that God, through His Son Jesus Christ, is offering you?
Remember, if you allow God into your heart, you are allowing true love to dwell there. You are acknowledging, without a doubt, that God loves you so much.
To God be the Glory!
